Present Background

Occupation: Most simply explained as ‘Middle (wo)Man’, officially holds a position in middle management but doesn’t actually do anything with it
Domain of: Shine and Hathaway
Education: Nothing official
Activities: Helping people, though not exactly out of the goodness of her heart
Home: Has a nice apartment near the centre of the city, has another up in Chicago
Finance: Fairly wealthy (not in the house-in-the-Hamptons sense but she’s not going bankrupt any time soon)
History: Terri was the second of two daughters born to an abusive, domineering father and mother that during Terri’s early years was a frightened, subverted wreck. She was never directly involved in any of the ‘episodes’ that were common in her household but she was well enough aware of them and before she could even walk properly she generally avoided her dad, hanging close to her mother or sister rather than going to him - even when he was in one of his good moods.

She was six when Rosaline took a nasty ‘fall’ down the stairs that, as it happened, would be the best thing that could ever have happened for Terri’s sake or her mother’s – as soon as she was discharged from hospital Rosa made plans to take the kids and run, never intending to tell her husband she was leaving or bother filing for divorce. A couple of her friends helped her work out the fine details – she’d go to the kid’s schools and say there was a family emergency not long after that start of the day, take them from class and head to a town a little south of Tampa where a friend had arranged a modest apartment for Rosa and the girls. She’d even bought plane tickets to Dallas, intending to leave the receipt where her husband could find it in order to throw him off their trail. The day came and everything would have been fine if not for the fact the elder child, Sarah, had to be kept home with a stomach bug. Given the receipt stated the day of the flights Rosa decided to take Terri and run anyway, intending to return for Sarah or to have a friend pick her up a few days later – it would never happen, with Sarah (then thirteen) running away herself when she thought her mother and sister had abandoned her.

Terri, meanwhile, had a modest enough upbringing. Her mother worked two crappy jobs to keep them fed and cared for and Terri never had the newest or best things – she never had the second or third best things, come to that – but she was willing to tolerate that given that it meant she didn’t have to go near the father she hated.

She was nine when she found a way to make it all more bearable. A colleague of her mother’s had a son in Terri’s class who liked to pick on smaller and younger kids, one of whom happened to come from a more financially comfortable background and who Terri happened to find crying one recess. They got to talking and, somehow, Terri found herself being offered $20 to get the bully off the kid’s back. Through her Mom she was already aware the bully was a bed-wetter and while she’d never even considered letting that slip before she did now, going directly to him and letting him now that if he didn’t leave the kid alone the entire school would know he pissed himself. It was only $20 but it very much set the trend for pretty much her entire life after that… Terri pays very close attention to things she’s told, to how people behave, to what they could potentially do for her or need done. Over the years she’s come to know a lot of influential or well-connected people – one of whom lists her as an employee of his company in order to make Terri’s tax forms seem more legit even though she’s never even been to his office – and she’s come to represent the ultimate definition of ‘middle man’ – she can get just about anything done for anyone, legal and non, but one way or another you can expect to pay her back.

Terri’s reasonably aware of the fact that the infamous Jay Wayne is her nephew – there’s enough facial similarity between he and her sister, they share a last name and so on – but she’s never sought out any definitive proof of the fact. With her own last name legally changed by her mother to ‘Carradine’ there’s nothing obvious to connect her to him from an outside observer’s point of view. The fact he shares a couple of personality traits with her – she’ll pay someone under eighteen to run an errand for her but never anything too illegal, and won’t do favors for people that she knows to take advantage of kids (where, of course, Jay tends to actively make that type of person dead) – only makes her more sure but even though she knows Jay she’s never raised the subject.

She generally won’t do her favors for anyone under eighteen as she firmly believes that kids should be allowed to be kids but pretty much the day someone hits the big 1-8 her opinion changes – adults should take responsibility for their own circumstances, and she’s always up front about what she expects from people. She never threatens anyone, nor does she even strongly imply a threat, but people who have let her down do have a tendency to find themselves in really shitty situations – if she needs a fall guy for one of her projects it’ll always be someone who’s tried to screw her over and, given the extensive network of people she knows, if she chooses to she can make things pretty damn difficult for someone.

Past Background

Occupation: Arranger and Information Broker
Education: Presumably had one, yus
Activities: Gathering information, helping people in order that they’d owe him favours, helping Door
Home: London Below
Finance: Pretty well off, thanks
History: The Marquis De Carabas was an arranger and information broker who dealt in favours and information. He was indebted to Lord Portico, who had saved his life in some unspecified circumstances, and was unable to repay said debt prior to Portico's murder. Perhaps this was why he was prepared to help Door find the truth behind her family's murder, though he still only agreed to do so in return for a "significant favour", an investment for the future. Described as "a little bit dodgy in the same way that a rat is a little bit covered in fur" De Carabas was one of the more colorful inhabitants of the underside. Brash, egotistical and self-serving he is ruthless in achieving his aims. But he was also daring and his dashing but cold exterior concealed a good heart.
